Job Description

Vanir is seeking an experieced Project Director of Fire and Life Safety Services to join the team in Sacramento, California. This position reports to Technical Services Director and/or assigned leadership. Coordinates, leads and conducts fire & life safety plan reviews for overall direction, coordination, and participation in preparing plan review activities and services from architects, owners, or other entities including local or state authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ). Responsible for overall plan review from conceptual, design, compliance, code, constructability, value engineering, preconstruction, and construction stages. Administers plan reviews in support of design, preconstruction, construction phases to ensure a code compliant, correct and correctable design and construction elements. Through examination, reviews, analyzes, collaborates and prepares for plan review, constructability, and examination services in support of organization and project-specific activities. Exercises discretion and independent judgment on a regular basis to perform tasks and activities in furtherance of organization and client needs.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and completion of plan reviews and constructability activities at a variety of phases to include but not be limited to conceptual, design, preconstruction, procurement, and construction. Monitors, evaluates, and ensures compliance with bid-ability, build-ability, compliance/code, applicable systems, and procedures.
  • Reviews drawings, prints, specifications, product manufacturer information, Engineering Service Reports, codes and standards, contracts, RFPs/RFQs, and all other construction documents for plan review and constructability-related activities. Provides responses to identified needs as required.
  • Ability to write clear and concise plan review comments including illustration of specific code section and general requirements. Ability to explain the intent and basis for code or jurisdictional requirements and applicability.
  • Participates in the preparation of construction schedules, requests for information, project utilization plans, and general conditions and specifications.
  • Utilizes and administers to a variety of plan review services to include contractual documents, design and engineering elements, geotechnical/civil/structural, fire protection and architectural calculations and approach.
  • Obtains, maintains, and manages data, information, communications, and approvals required by project and company requirements between owner, architects, engineers, contractor/subcontractors, or other project-related entities or jurisdictions.
  • Conducts and participates in project meetings to include documentation, administration, and tracking of relevant information and statuses. Primary organizer of related plan review meetings. Ability to organize and run internal and external meetings utilizing solid organizational, time management, facilitation, follow-up, and documentation.
  • Ensures contractor, architect, engineer and provider contractual requirements for plan review/constructability. Participate in negotiations when applicable and necessary.
  • Supervise subordinate personnel, including Plans Examiners and other assigned staff as appropriate. Prepare and conduct performance evaluations, mentor and coach employees to attain professional goals.
  • Supports business development activities for pursuits, proposals, submittals, and resources for cost and performance.
  • Performs all tasks to ensure the quality of Vanir’s services.
  • Provides full support to meet all Vanir HSE (Health, Safety and Environmental) goals and demonstrate full commitment to health and safety.
  • Monitors employee compliance with company’s safety policies and procedures and OSHA (or overriding regional occupational health and safety agency) standards.
  • Completes annual safety training.
  • Ensures that safety training requirements are met by subordinates.
  • Identifies and corrects unsafe working conditions and practices.
  • Ensures all necessary safety equipment and protective devices are both available and utilized.
  • Performs incident investigations, prepares incident reports and follow-up.
  • Wears all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
  • Cooperates with any safety audits conducted, whether in-house or external agency.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with emphasis in engineering, construction management, fire technology, building technology, architecture, or equivalent
    • Or Bachelor's degree with emphasis in fire protection engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, fire protection or related discipline or construction management, building inspection technology or equivalent technical education.
    • Or, non-degree holders must possess a high school diploma/GED and 10+ years of experience in a roll as a fire or building plans examiner for a local or state fire or building department or 15+ years of experience in construction management, engineering, or architectural-related fields.
  • NFPA or ICC certified as a Certified Fire Protection Specialist, Fire Plan Reviewer, Building Plan Examiner, Fire Inspector, Building Inspector, Fire Prevention Officer, Fire Marshal or Building Official.
  • Must possess knowledge and application of plan review and constructability processes
  • Experience in interpreting and application of fire and building codes, architectural, engineering, and construction to include scheduling, documentation, AEC principles, techniques, materials, applications, and practices
  • Understanding of contracts, documents, drawings, and specifications
  • Advanced knowledge of California Code of Regulations including but not limited to California Building Code, California Fire Code, California Administrative Code (when applicable), National Fire Protection Association Standards
